Our enforcement agencies play a crucial role in protecting lives and maintaining public safety. But preventing similar tragedies requires more than enforcement. Everyone in society has a role to play.
Families are often the first line of defence. Open communication and regular check-ins are key.
As a young person, I would appreciate comfortable, honest and judgment-free conversation, instead of an interrogatory “Where are you going again?”.
When young people feel safe from disappointment or punishment, they are more likely to share their struggles openly.
This would allow them to speak up about mental health concerns or risky influences early on.
Educators also have an important responsibility.
Rather than relying solely on traditional anti-drug talks, schools can continue to shift towards more collaborative and interactive approaches.
Encouraging students to reflect on how they would personally avoid drug abuse, or how they might support a friend in need, empowers them to take ownership of their decisions.
When counsellors and educators can build supportive systems that promote trust, emotional safety and the understanding that making mistakes does not define one’s worth, it would encourage students to step forward and seek help.
Drug abuse is not a distant or abstract issue; it affects real people.
Through collective effort involving law enforcement, families, schools and individuals, we can work towards preventing similar incidents and safeguarding the well-being of young people across our society.
