We thank Leore Chan for the letter “Address peak-hour overcrowding at ActiveSG pools” (May 22).
ActiveSG, as part of Sport Singapore, provides accessible facilities and programmes that enable different segments of the community to live better through sport.
In land-scarce Singapore, our swimming complexes serve the diverse sporting needs of our population, from recreational swimming to programmes such as SwimSafer, to high-performance training.
Public safety remains our priority. We have various measures in place, including regular reviews of lane allocations, to ensure that all users can enjoy our shared facilities safely.
Pool capacity is regularly monitored to avoid any potential overcrowding issues. Guests may check MyActiveSG+ for updates on crowd levels at our pools. Signs are also put up at our pool entrances to inform swimmers of scheduled activities in advance, letting them plan their visits accordingly.
For safety reasons, lanes are assigned to recreational swimmers for the purpose of lap swimming. In these lanes, swimmers are required to swim in a single file, with a U-turn at the end of their lap to minimise disruptions and the risk of collisions among swimmers. As good practice, swimmers should also keep a safe distance from one another.
ActiveSG’s lifeguards are trained to proactively intervene when they observe safety risks. We will continue to remind them to stay vigilant and help ensure safe and considerate behaviours in the pool.
We appreciate Chan’s feedback and will continue to ensure our facilities remain accessible and safe for all users. We also seek our guests’ understanding to use our facilities responsibly and be considerate of others.
