I refer to Mr Yeo Chee Kean’s Forum letter “Put in place a demerit system for renovation contractors” (Sept 19).

From Jan 1, 2024 to Aug 31, 2024, the Consumers Association of Singapore (Case) received 635 complaints against renovation companies. Common issues include poor workmanship, repeated delays in project completion, and unexpected additional costs.

To avoid such pitfalls, Case encourages consumers to patronise over 160 CaseTrust-accredited renovation contractors, who have committed to safeguarding consumers’ rights.

CaseTrust-accredited renovation companies are required to adopt the CaseTrust Standard Renovation Contract, which clearly outlines work and payment schedules and service warranty, and provides transparent pricing.

Under the terms of the CaseTrust Standard Renovation Contract, consumers make progressive payments. Renovation companies must also purchase a deposit performance bond to safeguard deposits against sudden business closures.

If there is an unresolved dispute, CaseTrust-accredited firms are required to attend a mediation session to resolve the issue.

Case will continue to expand the number of accredited renovation contractors to safeguard consumers.
