Every National Day, something stirs quietly within me.

As I watched the rehearsal at the National Stadium, I felt a familiar sense of awe and gratitude, especially when the Singapore flag soared above us and the fireworks lit up the sky.

I was born in 1950, when Singapore was a very different place. Over the decades, I have watched our nation grow from humble beginnings into the vibrant city we call home today.

This transformation did not happen by chance.

It was built through courage, vision, sacrifice and hard work by our early leaders, led by Lee Kuan Yew and his team, together with generations of Singaporeans who believed in a better future.

I am not usually sentimental, yet every National Day reminds me how privileged I am to call this island my homeland.

This year, I have decided to book a suite at a hotel to celebrate National Day with my family. It will not simply be an evening of watching the parade and fireworks. It will be a quiet celebration of gratitude for the country that has given us opportunities, safety, friendships, and a lifetime of memories.

Happy 61st birthday, Singapore.
