Forum: Curb cyclists speeding through zebra crossings

I am writing to highlight a growing concern among motorists regarding the behaviour of cyclists at pedestrian zebra crossings.

While traffic regulations generally require cyclists to slow down and look out for traffic at crossings, there is a widespread and dangerous practice of cycling across these strips at high speeds without stopping or dismounting. Cyclists should give way to motorists unless they dismount and walk across.

Recent videos on social media have shown numerous near-misses and actual accidents occurring at these junctions. The speed at which a bicycle enters a zebra crossing is much higher than that of a pedestrian, giving motorists far less time to react.

To mitigate future accidents and improve road harmony, I urge the authorities to consider installing clear, multi-language notices or prominent “Dismount and push” and “Give way to motorist” signs at busy zebra crossings.

Road safety is a shared responsibility. Clearer signage and better education for our cycling community will go a long way towards preventing avoidable tragedies.
