Big questions for Pakistan as its deep state flounders

Fresh elections, with Imran Khan allowed to contest, may ultimately be the only good option for its generals.

Odious as the prospect may be, letting jailed former premier Imran Khan back in politics may be the best solution for Pakistan’s near-term stability, says the writer.

There is a phrase endemic in Pakistan – “king’s parties” – that refers to political formations covertly propped up by the military-led deep state.

These typically tend to do well at the hustings, in part because the uniformed forces are still highly regarded in Pakistan and, equally, because the deep state has plenty of ways and means to orchestrate its desired objectives.
