MANILA - The salty air hung heavy with tension as Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) officers aboard two white ships braced themselves for what was coming for them in the South China Sea.

On June 30, some 12 nautical miles from the Second Thomas Shoal in the Spratlys, China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels blocked the path of the PCG’s BRP Malabrigo and BRP Malapascua.
