An art gallery owner from China who set up shop here once asked me about some local behaviour she had noticed. Her question: Why do Singaporeans peer into an art gallery, but hesitate to step inside?

“In China,” she said, “people come in even if they don’t intend to buy anything. They ask questions, they want to know more. In Singapore, it’s not like that.”
