A few months ago, the algorithm on my Facebook feed threw up some pseudo-psychology posts about how super independent people could actually be suffering from the unresolved trauma of being let down in their lives.

My first reaction, as someone who prides herself on being fairly independent, was to scoff. Was this yet another sinister attempt by the patriarchy to undermine self-sufficient women, I wondered. Especially since we have, for many generations now, been able to earn our own money, buy our own house and happily live there alone without a man, but perhaps in the company of a few cats.
