The tiny creature with black fur and wary green eyes was barely out of kittenhood, crouching in a cage at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals centre. The previous week, I had visited and rejected her. She was with another black kitten, her sister. “Let them be adopted together,” I thought. But on this day, she was alone.
She may have been the last of the litter to go because when she unfurled her body, unlike her sister, she had half a tail ending in a strange, unnerving hook shape.
