Ang Mo Kio is one of the oldest estates in Singapore and the area around Mayflower station houses a large elderly population.

This community is famous for its songbird-watching pastime, which is reflected in both the architecture and artworks of metal birds in the station. The architect was inspired by the idea of mayflowers and bird cages to create the honeycomb design unique to the station.
