SINGAPORE - SilkAir pilot Captain Vanessa Ess grew up dreaming of the skies.

The only child of a Singapore Airlines (SIA) pilot and a lawyer, she spent her childhood watching planes take off and land at the old Paya Lebar Airport where her father reported for work.
