JAKARTA (THE JAKARTA POST/ANN) - Are you bored with regular birthday cakes with all of that oh-so-sweet sugar icing?

Well then, a cafe in Kelapa Gading in North Jakarta is creatively using noodles as the main ingredient for its birthday treats to offer ennui-ridden cake-eaters an exciting alternative.

Dubbed the TOT Cake, it involves a two-tiered cake with a 14cm diameter for the upper layer and an 18cm foundation. Made from 14 to 17 packs of instant noodles, it can be enjoyed by at least eight to 10 people.

In addition to instant noodles, the TOT Cake, priced at Rp 140,000 (S$14.74), also utilises various toppings.

"The first [topping] is taken from our spicy rice menu, such as shredded chicken, salted cuttlefish and meatballs," the cafe's co-owner and chef, Erwin, told The Jakarta Post.

"The second topping is beef cornet and melted cheese."

Erwin says there is no difficulty in making the cake, but it does take time to shape the noodles into the appropriate form.

After being posted on TOT.Aw's Instagram, the cake has gained a degree of popularity among netizens.

Established in November 2016, TOT.Aw (Totally Awesome) cafe strives to make things that people never think about.

"We also have a noodle menu with cheese and chocolate toppings. So it's really about food that is rarely found out there," Erwin said.

Fans of the eatery can expect to enjoy new more unique dishes in the future.

"We plan to make more Indonesian-flavoured toppings such as chicken gulai [curry stew], opor [coconut milk stew] and rendang [beef simmered in coconut and spices]," said Erwin, adding that the cafe also planned to launch a noodle-influenced dessert menu in the coming months.
