New York's Museum of Modern Art unveils its latest exhibit exploring garments that had a significant impact on the world in the last 100 years.

NEW YORK (REUTERS) - MoMA's latest exhibit is custom tailored for the stylish museum goer.

The New York institution is showing a collection of iconic clothing pieces that impacted the world in the past 100 years, ranging from haute couture to street style.

Senior Curator Paola Antonelli rolled up her sleeves for the exhibit that explores the different facets of fashion.

"What was important for us was to have an exhibition that talked about design as aesthetics and fashion as politics that talked about the ethical implications. And also that was very clear, so it could speak to an audience as wide as possible," said Antonelli.

Some pieces are politically charged while others have a more religious undertone.

Some are very timely, such as the football jersey of Colin Kaepernick, the first NFL player to take a knee during the national anthem, now widely copied and harshly criticised by US President Donald Trump.

Some topics are explored in depth such as the ever-popular Little Black Dress.

"It starts of course with Coco Chanel's Little Black Dress which is considered, even though it was not the first time there was a little black dress in history. It was the first time the little black dress was a name and was called that way. And then it moves throughout the decades until it gets to Rick Owens just a few years ago," Antonelli added.

This is MoMA's first exhibit centred on fashion since 1944, and it will be on display until January 2018.
