Asian spinoffs of reality series to watch

ASIA'S GOT TALENT

What: Part of the popular Got Talent franchise, which is credited in the Guinness Book Of World Records last year as the "most successful reality TV format", the show has contestants from around Asia showcasing their various talents. The Asian spin-off's judges are Grammy-winning musician David Foster, ex-Spice Girls singer Melanie Chisholm, Taiwanese-American Vanness Wu and Indonesian singer Anggun. Contestants range from the usual budding singers to the weird and wonderful - one episode in the Asian spin-off featured a masked Japanese man who can peel a banana without using his hands.

ASIA'S NEXT TOP MODEL

What: A spin-off of the popular America's Next Top Model series helmed by supermodel Tyra Banks, this has aspiring Asian models pitted against one another in various challenges and photo shoots. Now in the middle of its third season, the show is hosted by Filipina-British model Georgina Wilson. Singapore-based model Nadya Hutagalung led the previous two seasons. At press time, Singaporean contestant Aimee Cheng-Bradshaw is still in the running to becoming Asia's Next Top Model.

DANCE SINGAPORE DANCE

What: This is Singapore's version of popular Indian TV dance contest Dance India Dance, where local contestants show off their dance moves in various genres, but also get the chance to train with experienced dance choreographers Anil Dandge and Roche Mascarenhas. The series has just completed auditions and selected its Top 12 contestants, who will compete in weekly elimination challenges to vie for a cash prize of $10,000.

When: To premiere in the second quarter of the year

FOOD WARS ASIA

What: Like the American original, Food Wars Asia picks two of the best eateries serving similar food in a cooking showdown that is determined by a blind taste test. The new six-part series has three episodes focused on Singapore restaurants and hawkers, including an episode that has the popular Omakase Burger and Fatboy's The Burger Bar go head to head in a burger battle.

HOW DO I LOOK? ASIA

What: This fashion makeover show is a spin-off of the American How Do I Look? hosted by stylist Jeannie Mai. The Asian version, which is now holding an open casting call, will be hosted by Malaysian actress and fashionista Sazzy Falak (left). MASTERCHEF ASIA

What: The Asian version of the popular TV cooking competition franchise has yet to announce its judges, but anyone who has seen any of the other versions can expect it to feature top chefs and food experts as they search for the region's best home cooks. The casting call has just ended and the show is slated for broadcast later this year.
