GUIZHOU – After a short, bumpy stretch of winding village roads, we arrive at Shilong Cave in Maige township, around an hour’s drive from Guiyang city. Clad in life jackets, helmets and thick wetsuits, I join around 20 young Chinese adventurers – mostly women – ready to plunge underground.

It is my first time caving, and I am slightly daunted. We enter the darkness on stand-up paddleboards, guided through still, astonishingly clear pools.
