LONDON – Form follows function, so a cup has to be a receptacle to contain liquids.

But who thought of adding a handle to a porcelain cup or an anti-heat grip pad to a hot paper coffee cup, so people can hold these containers better? And how does the choice of material or the colour or the image on the cup add emotional appeal?
