ATHENS – For many travellers, Athens is a gateway rather than a destination.

The Greek capital is often a brief stopover: a day or two to visit the Acropolis, wander through the city’s oldest neighbourhood, Plaka, and perhaps squeeze in a museum, before moving on to the Greek islands.
