TOKYO – In December 2023, I check into Hoshinoya Tokyo for a sleep retreat. Just before stepping onto the long tatami-lined corridor behind an imposing cypress door, I surrender my shoes to the staff, slip my feet into a pair of slippers and do not step out for two days.

I am among the 21 per cent of people in Singapore who sleep fewer than five hours a night, based on a report released in March by international research firm YouGov. The report also revealed that 56 per cent of people in Singapore sleep fewer than seven hours a night.
