HIROSHIMA, Japan – For the Zen monks, days in the calendar that contain the digits four and nine are regarded as special.

On those six days each month – except February in a leap year – the monks of Japan’s Rinzai sect set aside their meditative state and move from their modest diet of rice and barley to an indulgent udon meal. And they must slurp loudly.
