SINGAPORE - Before setting sail from Seychelles to Singapore in January, team leader Lawrence Leong knew one of their greatest risks was being stranded in the middle of the ocean, thousands of kilometres from land, too far out even for a rescue boat to locate.
Barely three days into their first leg from Seychelles to the Maldives, one engine failed. The other puttered along for a few hours before giving out too.
