TAIWAN – There is a certain stillness on a mountain at 2.30am, broken only by the soft crunch of boots on the trail and gentle panting of hikers ahead.
Multi-day treks are not new to me. I have scaled Mount Rinjani in Indonesia (3,726m) and hiked to Everest Base Camp in Nepal (5,364m). Yet, as I approached the summit of Yushan, Taiwan’s highest peak at 3,952m, I faced an unexpected challenge – altitude.
