NIIGATA – In a railway station, a corner of arcade machines permits entry only to adults. Inside, grown-ups grin, rattle their tokens, then approach rows of sake vending machines.

Younger ones are not left out. By a rocky shoreline, kids delight as they balance on a wooden tub in search of abalone. Meanwhile, tourists pose in artsy tunnels that open out to jaw-dropping mountain gorges.
