SINGAPORE – It is hard to imagine that an unassuming plant, characterised by small, round leaves and delicate creeping stems, would skyrocket to viral fame, with clips on it amassing over three million views on TikTok.

Yet, long before it captured the attention of Japanese and South Korean influencers for its transformative effects on skin, cica (better known as centella asiatica) had already woven itself into the fabric of traditional Chinese, Ayurvedic and African medicinal practices.
