SINGAPORE - Pokémon and Lego are set to release in 2026 toy bricks featuring the popular media franchise, but they will not be on sale in Lego stores here.
The new Lego Pokémon series was announced by both companies in a joint statement on March 18, in a multi-year partnership.
In a 13-second teaser clip shared by both Lego and Pokémon on their social media pages, the lightning-shaped tail of the franchise’s iconic character Pikachu can be seen, in the form of Lego bricks, along with the logos of both companies.
No other details - such as when the new sets would be available, and which characters would feature in the collaboration - were announced.
In a media reply, the spokeswoman for Lego said: “Currently, Lego Pokémon won’t be available to purchase from the Lego Group in certain markets, including Singapore, but we will let fans know if anything changes in the future.”
Originally a title for the Nintendo Game Boy video game console, the Pokémon franchise expanded into video games, trading card games and merchandise sales, making it one of the world’s biggest media franchises.
As of March 2024, it had shipped over 480 million units of Pokémon-related software worldwide, and produced over 64.8 billion cards for its trading card game.
Danish toy maker Lego is one of the world’s largest toy makers, and have recently announced record earnings - sales rose 13 per cent to US$10.8 billion (S$14.4 billion) in 2024, while net profit grew 5 per cent to US$1.3 billion.
It also has collaborations with well-known franchises such as Star Wars, Harry Potter and Marvel, but will introduce Pokemon-related bricks for the first time.
On the other hand, Pokémon has been featured in toy brick brands Nanoblocks and Mattel’s Mega Bloks.
