SINGAPORE – As rumblings of Singapore’s General Election (GE) grew ever louder in late 2024, Pink Blossoms Brewing founder and head brewer Teo Hong Han knew he needed a special brew to mark the occasion.

“We often make double Indian pale ales (IPAs) for special occasions like National Day, Chinese New Year and, of course, elections,” he told The Straits Times at the Ubi brewery located in an industrial estate, tucked between car showrooms and home furnishing stores.

During the

Presidential Election in 2023,

it launched its first politically inspired brew, Head to Head.

To mark GE2025, Pink Blossoms is offering up two new brews: A New Hope, a double IPA; and Elections Endgame, a smoothie-style beer. Both have names borrowed from popular movie franchises – Star Wars (1977 to present) and The Avengers (2012 to present) – respectively.

An accountant by training, Mr Teo, 40, has a keen interest in politics.

“Policies and how a country is run affect all of us, especially business owners,” he said.

“But given that politics have become more divisive in recent years around the world, we want to remind people that no matter your politics, you can always come together over a pint.”

Most of Pink Blossoms’ regulars prefer a bolder flavour profile, making IPAs and double IPAs among its most popular offerings. Which was why there was a conscious decision to have one of its election brews in a thick, rich style containing fruit puree, making the drinking experience akin to having a smoothie.

“We’ve used five different types of fruit in it, which represent five new GRCs and five multi-cornered fights,” Mr Teo said.

“Also, in some ways, it’s an attempt to reach out to a wider range of people, especially those who don’t drink beer, because something that tastes of fruit and feels like a smoothie may be a lower barrier to entry.”

Planning for the beers began in late 2024, as he started to work out his brewing schedule.

But therein lay a problem: There was no way of knowing exactly when the election would take place, and production for each offering would take between two and three weeks.

“We were quite fortunate in that just as A New Hope was ready, it was Nomination Day (on April 23),” he said, adding that Elections Endgame was ready shortly after.

Since the brews – available only at Pink Blossoms’ tasting room in Ubi Avenue 3 – have gone on tap, they have been equally popular, with customers quickly making their way through the 100 litres on offer.

Mr Teo says some regulars are planning to watch the count together at the brewery on Polling Day on May 3, with pints of election brews in hand, of course.

“I think our supply can probably last till

Polling Day.

I hope,” he said with a laugh.
