Torque steer was a fairly common phenomenon with early transverse engine front-wheel-drive cars. When accelerating hard, the car would veer to one side, requiring the driver to make quick steering corrections to keep the vehicle on a straight line.
The main cause was the unequal length of the front-wheel driveshafts necessitated by the packaging of the engine, transmission and differential all in the front.
