Although bolts fasten a wheel to its hub, they are not the main elements that ensure centring. The wheel’s centre bore, where the cap with car emblem is fitted, has to first sit on a collar that is part of the hub.
Replacement wheels are usually made for a range of car models. It is therefore common to find a wheel with a centre bore that is larger than the original collar on the car’s hub.
