In Singapore's ever-changing motoring scene, a subtle change is under way as more families transition from traditional combustion engines to electric vehicles (EV).
Businessman Desmond Tan, 52, exemplifies this shift with his recent switch to an EV, offering a firsthand look at how this technology is reshaping daily commutes and family life.
“The instant torque is impressive. It's quiet, and nothing shakes inside because there's no engine,” he says, describing his Omoda E5, which he bought last July.
For the Tan family, this new vehicle represents more than just an upgrade – it's a step into a different driving experience.
The impact of the compact crossover extends beyond the driver's seat. Clara, his 16-year-old daughter, says: “It's really quiet compared with other cars.”
Her observation cuts to the core of the EV experience. “Sitting in this is definitely more comfortable than our previous car. There's no bump in the back seats and there's more room for us overall.”
The combination of comfort, responsive acceleration and silent efficiency perfectly suits Mr Tan’s busy lifestyle and family needs. Running both an employment business and a cafe, he finds the Omoda E5 well suited for his packed schedule of sending Clara and his elder daughter, 20, to school and attending business meetings.
His first impression of the Omoda E5 was that it has premium build quality, with double-layered windows and soft leather-like materials and wood-grained surfaces used in the interior.

The car’s 15 assisted driver assistance system features, including a 540-degree camera, blind spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert, were also standout additions.
Mr Tan is one of many drivers in Singapore who have switched over from cars with internal combustion engines to EVs.
“If you’d asked me two years ago if I would buy an EV, I would have said no,” he says. “But now there are charging points everywhere. I find it more convenient than having to search for petrol stations.”
And you’ll likely encounter more EVs and more diverse EV brands than before. From sleek BYDs gliding down expressways to compact Ora Good Cats zipping around neighbourhoods, Singapore’s streets are witnessing a silent, electrified revolution.
This changing landscape is driven by a combination of government initiatives, growing consumer interest and advancements in EV technology.
Charging ahead
As part of its broader Green Plan 2030, Singapore has set ambitious goals to phase out purely internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles by 2040 and increase EV charging infrastructure to meet rising demand. EV registrations are steadily climbing, supported by incentives such as the Vehicular Emissions Scheme and enhanced rebates under the EV Early Adoption Incentive.
As at end-August 2024, Singapore had 20,497 registered EVs, a significant increase from the 11,941 EVs at the end of 2023, representing a nearly 72 per cent growth in registrations over the past year.
