SINGAPORE – Nothing quite demonstrates the strengths and weaknesses of plug-in hybrids like the new Range Rover 3.0SE PHEV.

The 5m raised, all-terrain limousine that weighs nearly 2.8 tonnes averages 3.6 litres/100km when its lithium battery has a full or partial charge. But this enviable efficiency is gone with the wind once the cells are empty. Driven with a depleted battery for the rest of the test drive, the behemoth’s fuel consumption trebles to 11.6 litres/100km.
