SINGAPORE - American electric car maker Tesla's offer of a Porsche-matching Model 3 for the price of a Toyota Camry is hard to beat.

But China's BYD has a different proposition. Instead of performance as a measure of bang for buck, it is touting efficiency, range and charging time.
