SINGAPORE – Having waited almost six years for their Build-To-Order flat in Sengkang, Mr Melvrick Goh and Ms Zhi Min Ong were excited to finally collect the keys.

The couple – who are in their 30s and both IT professionals specialising in software product development – wanted their first home to evolve with their life stages.

They plan to start a family in the future but, for now, the 1,274 sq ft HDB unit is just for them.

With this brief in mind, design consultant K.S. Tee from Ovon Design proposed removing the walls between two bedrooms and combining them into a larger common room that serves as an entertainment-cum-study area.

The existing doors have also been replaced with a bi-fold glass door that not only opens up the space visually, but also connects it with the rest of the flat.

Two desks and chairs, as well as wall-mounted shelves at one end of the room, address the couple’s work-from-home needs.

At the other end of the room, full-height cabinets and shelves provide space for storage and display. This frees up space in the centre for a large modular sofa.

“We love the common room most, as this is where we hang out together on a daily basis,” says Mr Goh. He and his wife moved into the home in December 2023 after an eight-week renovation.

“Friends who visit often find themselves gravitating to this area towards the latter half of the gathering, when they are in the mood to sink into the sofa and just chill,” he adds.

Another element introduced to facilitate gatherings is an island beside the living and dining area. Being just outside the kitchen, it functions as a serving station so that guests do not have to venture into the kitchen. It also complements the pantry behind the dining room, where the coffee machine is placed.

The couple’s preferred neutral palette has been applied not only in the kitchen, but also throughout the home.

The master bedroom oozes cosiness and warmth.

“Our moods vary through the days and we wanted our home to reflect that, so you will find some Japandi or industrial elements within the space,” says Mr Goh.

They took a bolder design approach to the bathrooms. The master bathroom has a modern luxe vibe with the use of black marble-look tiles.

In the common bathroom, green wall tiles, brass fittings and black-and-white Peranakan-style floor tiles create a vintage-industrial vibe.
