SINGAPORE – When the owners of this home bought their resale flat, they had a clear idea of what they wanted.

The couple in their 30s, who work in education and healthcare, purchased this five-room, 1,100 sq ft Housing Board flat in Edgedale Plains to live in with their newborn son and the wife’s parents.

They wanted to create a serene atmosphere characterised by muted tones and dark hues. With three generations and five people under one roof, it had to be functional as well, with rounded edges to baby-proof the place.

They enlisted Ovon Design’s senior designer Joann Yee for the project. They kept to the original layout, and played around with the lighting and colours.

As the couple did not want built-in carpentry in the living area, they combined loose furnishings in various styles.

The sofa, armchairs, coffee table and television console all have different designs, materials and colours. Each piece complements, rather than competes with, the others – proving that not everything has to match to be in harmony.

Not only does the approach reflect their mix-and-match approach to style, but it also serves as a perfect space for the family to gather.

The living area is the couple’s favourite part of their home.

The star of the dining area is a bespoke travertine table. It took the couple some time, but they found chairs with simple dark wood frames that contrast with the light-coloured travertine, and curved backs that echo the dining table’s elliptical base and rounded edges.

As the couple are passionate about cooking and hosting guests, they wanted a kitchen island where they could eat and prepare meals.

Taking cues from the dining set, Ms Yee paired a travertine-look sintered worktop with a dark brown wood laminate base.

A clean, resort-inspired look with more dark wood laminates for the wardrobe and door give the couple a cosy master bedroom that is conducive for rest and relaxation.

A similar palette continues in the master bathroom, with travertine-look tiles and a textured feature wall reminiscent of beach sand.

The family moved into their new home in mid-2023 after a 12-week renovation that cost about $75,000, excluding furnishing.
