Ikea’s Chinese New Year Fossta collection

To commemorate and celebrate the Year of the Horse, which begins on Feb 17, Swedish furniture brand Ikea has released a seasonal collection of red and equine-themed items for the home, including soft furnishings and tableware (from $3.90).

While the pieces in the collection would make auspicious additions to your home for Chinese New Year, most of them – if not all – are still appropriate decor for the rest of the year.

Highlights include the Fossta horse cushion cover ($7.90), with tassels that represent the horse’s mane.

Not everything is horse-themed. For instance, the fish-shaped Fossta pot stand ($4.90) is designed to resemble a koi fish, which symbolises prosperity and abundance.

The collection is available now, while stocks last.  Yamini Chinnuswamy

Japanese atelier’s Year of the Horse sculpture

This limited-edition festive figurine is called "Uma", which is Japanese for horse.

Japanese atelier Seiun Souemon Hara is releasing a limited-edition collectible bronze sculpture to celebrate the upcoming Year of the Horse.

Released annually, this line of zodiac-themed collectibles began in 2020 with a figure for the Year of the Rat. The collection is part of a tie-up with local artist Jackson Tan, creative director of creative agency Black. He is also the founder of online lifestyle retailer Art-Zoo and co-founder of local art and design collective Phunk.

Each 350g statue is made to order and costs $278, which includes shipping costs. The estimated waiting time is between two weeks and a month.

Mr Tan and his wife met fifth-generation Japanese bronze master craftsman Satoshi Hara in 2016. Since 2018, they have worked together to showcase the atelier’s work globally as part of a project named Hanabi.

“We were inspired by the artistry of Mr Hara’s creations and his mastery of the craft,” said Mr Tan. “We were also touched by how his wife and him have dedicated their lives to the craft and legacy.”

The statues are crafted with a 670-year-old tradition of handsculpting with beeswax, which, when baked, melts to reveal the bronze figure. This is later polished using a smoking technique incorporating burnt rice stems.

Seiun Souemon Hara has operated out of Japan’s Kashiwazaki prefecture for five generations. Teo Kai Xiang
