Office designs not keeping up with workers’ needs: Gensler survey

A recent survey of more than 16,000 full-time office workers across 15 countries showed that office designs are not keeping pace with the evolving needs of the workforce.

According to Gensler, the world’s biggest architecture and design firm, there is a direct positive link between top performers and working in a high-quality workplace.

The Gensler Workplace Survey, which was conducted between Oct 31, 2023, and Jan 29, 2024, involved respondents of various ages in a range of roles and geographies, including the United States, Britain and South-east Asia. Respondents excluded full-time remote workers.

It found that workers in higher-quality spaces reported more positive feelings about their company.

The report highlighted the importance of going beyond building efficiency, or the effective design of spaces, in defining workplace performance.

The emotional response to space, also called the “workplace experience”, is a recent finding that indicates a significant shift towards a more people-centric approach to workplace performance.

The survey showed that those born between 1997 and 2010, also known as Gen Z, look for places such as cafes, outdoor workspaces and libraries.

Meanwhile, top performers want variety in their workplaces, with opportunities for learning, networking and socialising.

Malaysian gaming-chair manufacturer TTRacing has announced a collaboration with the popular anime series One Piece (1999 to present) in celebration of the show’s 25th anniversary.

Partnering series producers Toei Animation, this special-edition collection of gaming chairs brings characters from the show to life.

The range includes designs inspired by One Piece characters such as Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro, Nami and Tony Tony Chopper.

It also incorporates elements from the show, such as the Grand Line map. Each purchase comes with a complimentary straw hat or additional accessory, depending on the set. Fans can buy the chairs – priced between $199 and $449 – on TTRacing’s website.

The chairs are made with velour and a breathable fabric that is said to deliver the right amount of performance for long, uninterrupted gaming sessions.

One Piece, which began in 1997 as a manga series, follows Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates on their quest to find the legendary One Piece treasure and become the Pirate King. It is one of the longest-running manga series in history.

The Green-House festival is back for its third iteration at New Bahru in River Valley. The event on July 13 and 14 marks the first large-scale public event at the new creative cluster, which was redeveloped from the old Nan Chiau High School.

Green-House 2024 will focus on future food and conscious fashion, alongside art installations, documentary screenings and pet adoption drives.

The festival, organised by sustainable lifestyle gift store Pass It On Studio, will span more than 18,000 sq ft and will be divided into three themed zones: Renew, Reimagine and Reconnect. Brands at the event include first-time participants coffee brand Nespresso, outdoor furniture company Helinox and luggage manufacturer Samsonite.

Studio founder Michelle Chow says the festival began in 2022 as a get-together for local sustainable brands to spark ideas about green ways to elevate urban living. She adds that the festival’s gradual expansion now allows for greater diversity that celebrates different facets of sustainability.
