Why are some plants and flowers more prized than others during Chinese New Year? The Straits Times looks at eight festive plants deeply rooted in Chinese culture.

Also called the red Ilex verticillata or winterberry, this plant is imported from China and can be found in Far East Flora nursery in Thomson Road. It symbolises "bountiful abundance" for the Chinese and is sought-after for its branches laden with jewel-red berries.
