SINGAPORE – Undergraduate Valery Tan, 27, felt lost and exasperated when her mother started experiencing mood swings, hot flushes and depressive episodes at age 51 in 2022.

“I realised how much it was affecting her quality of life, her self-confidence and even our relationship. It was only until we sat down for an honest chat about her symptoms, and some online research, that we finally understood that the underlying cause was perimenopause,” says the only child who is studying human resource management in the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS).
