Eminem is about to enter a new chapter of his life – grandfatherhood – and he found out about it in the most heart-warming way.
In his new music video for his song, Temporary, released on Oct 3, the 51-year-old American rapper is seen watching home movies when his daughter Hailie Jade Mathers, 28, surprises him with a Detroit Lions jersey emblazoned with “Grandpa” on the back.
The video, filled with nostalgic clips from the 1990s and 2000s, documents their bond and captures the emotional moment when he learns about his upcoming role as a grandparent.
Temporary, featuring American singer and songwriter Skylar Grey, is a tribute to Hailie. It is featured on Eminem’s latest and 12th album The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grace), which dropped in July.
The video seamlessly weaves old footage of father and daughter during the height of Eminem’s career with more recent moments, including Hailie’s wedding in May.
Eminem’s album signals the symbolic end of his Slim Shady alter ego. As part of the roll-out, he published a tongue-in-cheek obituary for Slim Shady in the Detroit Free Press in May, and literally took a chainsaw to the character in the music video for the song Tobey.
Slim Shady is Eminem’s infamous alter ego, a darker, more controversial persona that allowed the rapper to explore taboo subjects and vent his frustrations with society. Introduced in his breakthrough 1999 album The Slim Shady LP, this character became known for outrageous lyrics, often filled with violent, satirical and shocking content.
The expanded edition of The Death Of Slim Shady arrived in September, complete with three new tracks and a reimagined version of the song Fuel.
