SINGAPORE – Different reasons took them overseas, but these Singaporeans have one thing in common: They set up thriving small businesses, despite having zero experience in the food and beverage industry.

Award-winning cheesemonger Hakim Halim, 34, who went to Melbourne to further his studies, was an online marketeer before venturing into running a deli. He now champions artisanal Australian cheese at his shop at Queen Victoria Market.
