SINGAPORE – For a peaceful night out off the bustling Orchard Road belt, head to The Standard, Singapore, located next to Shangri-La Singapore in Orange Grove Road.
The 143-room hotel is home to Cafe Standard on the ground floor, which offers an all-day-dining menu, and its main restaurant on the second floor – Kaya at The Standard, which includes its Kaya Bar for drinks.
To be clear, Kaya’s name has nothing to do with the sweet coconut spread. Short for izakaya, the modern concept offers a selection of Japanese-inspired sharing plates best paired with creative cocktails from the bar.
At night, the cosy space, flanked by beautiful floral art on the walls, is bathed in warm, dim lighting, best suited for winding down after a long day.
Menu highlights include a refreshing cold somen and tomatoes ($18) in a tomato kombu consomme; anago fry ($26), saltwater eel coated in a crisp tri-coloured arare cracker crust; and lamb furikake ($42), charcoal-grilled New Zealand lamb rack and grilled broccolini seasoned with furikake.
For carbs, the Kani Meshi Nabe ($65) features Japanese snow crab, ikura and rice properly charred in a claypot and mixed tableside with a rich uni cream sauce.
Signature cocktails include the Niji Negroni ($25), which comprises sakura tea-infused Roku Gin, discarded cascara sweet vermouth and yuzu umeshu; and Takuya Mary ($27), a take on the Bloody Mary with tomato-infused Tito’s Vodka, mirin and soya sauce and topped with a nori crisp and dashi carrot gel.
Set lunch is available on weekdays from $22 with a choice of main accompanied by garden greens, Japanese rice and miso soup.
An a la carte brunch buffet ($88 an adult, $44 a child aged six to 11, includes free-flow fruit coolers and iced tea) is available every last Saturday of the month, where you can have your fill of teriyaki-cured salmon tacos, tamago sando and chicken karaage, among other dishes.
