SINGAPORE – Step into old-school Hong Kong at Lo Hey HK Seafood, opened just over two weeks ago at One Holland Village.

Its interiors take inspiration from the golden age of Hong Kong cinema in the 1980s and 1990s, with cinema posters and neon lights. There is also a curtained entrance to one of two private rooms (12 seats each, minimum spending of $600) – perfect for that OOTD movie entrance shot.

Like several eateries in the mall, Lo Hey’s 52-seat outdoor section is pet-friendly – not common in Chinese restaurants.

If it feels familiar, it is because the 124-seat home-grown restaurant is the sister outlet of Hey Kee HK Seafood in Guillemard Road, which also sports an old Hong Kong theme and offers a similar array of live seafood dishes.

With Lo Hey, this Westie doesn’t have to trek to Hey Kee any more for dishes such as the Typhoon Shelter-style stir-fried crab (from $9.80 for 100g), where live crab is topped with a crunchy medley of garlic, scallions, chilli peppers and fermented black beans.

I’m also pleased to see the steamed fish with pickled chilli and salted vegetables (from $10 for 100g) on the menu, a sour and spicy number made even better with a sprinkling of pork lard. At Hey Kee, I had the equally delicious – albeit less spicy – version with chopped yellow chilli, which is also available at Lo Hey.

There are plenty of new dishes, particularly the tossed chicken salad ($22.80) in honour of the restaurant’s name.

Instead of fish, you toss the salad with poached chicken and a mix of julienned vegetables, including cucumber, leek and red peppers. Here, it can be Chinese New Year all day, every day.

Other highlights include braised beef short ribs ($42.80), in a rich sauce with tomatoes and tender potatoes; traditional soya sauce duck ($30 for half, $58 for whole); and sauteed watercress with dried shrimps ($16.80).
