SINGAPORE – As dependable as Christmas and New Year is Goodwood Park Hotel’s annual Durian Fiesta, now in its 42nd year.
In 2025, flowers and fruit are the theme, and the creations are available until Aug 10. Thankfully, none of the pretty shapes and adornments detract from the gloriously stinky fruit.
My picks for the best offerings from this year’s selection are made with D24 durian pulp: the Mini D24 Spikey Duo ($12.50 for two, for takeaway) and D24 Ice Cream Ring Of Joy ($22 for two, for takeaway). They are worth the calories because both let the durian shine.
The almost-too-cute-to-eat Mini D24 Spikey starts off with a biscuit base. On top and shaped like an open durian are vanilla sponge, durian mousse and a pandan and durian mousse. If it sounds like durian overload, yes, it is. And isn’t this exactly why people eat the fruit? Too much is never enough.
The Ring Of Joy is a doughnut-shaped durian ice-cream dessert covered with white or milk chocolate. The intensity of flavour is there in the ice cream, which has durian pulp in it, but it shines through more vividly in the white chocolate ring.
These desserts are perfectly portioned too – not so big that they are overwhelming, but just big enough to maybe have a second one.
