SINGAPORE – Coffee lovers, the wait is almost over.

The famed Blue Bottle Coffee chain from the United States is opening its first cafe in South-east Asia in Singapore. It will be in Japanese retailer Lumine’s Singapore global flagship store at Raffles City shopping centre on April 3, according to a press statement.

It takes over the space at Lumine Singapore that currently houses Blue Bottle Coffee’s retail section. That was the first step it took in August 2024 to enter the market, in line with the return of Lumine to Singapore.

At the cafe, diners can expect a “seasonally curated espresso menu”, alongside the brand’s signature coffee brewed with its single-origin beans.

First established in 2002 as a small coffee cart in Oakland, California, the chain has grown its presence across the US, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and China.

Its expansion into Singapore is made possible by its partnership with Lumine, as several Blue Bottle Coffee cafes are located within Lumine-operated shopping centres in Japan.

Japan was also the first country that Blue Bottle Coffee opened in outside the US. Another outlet is set to open by end-March as a key tenant at Newoman Takanawa, Lumine’s latest shopping destination in Tokyo.

Calling the opening here an “incredibly exciting milestone”, Mr Kester Whitaker, Blue Bottle Coffee’s chief growth officer and head of Asia, notes that Singapore is a city with “a rich cafe culture, deep appreciation for craftsmanship, and a key gateway into South-east Asia’s vibrant and fast-growing speciality coffee scene”.

Mr Teruyuki Omote, president and chief executive of Lumine, adds: “I am excited to see the impact that Blue Bottle Coffee’s opening will have in Singapore, and how it will bring fresh value to the city’s dynamic cafe culture.”
