SINGAPORE - On a balmy afternoon one weekend in July, several young women paid $60++ to attend a three-hour workshop at the Design Orchard mall to learn how to transform old clothes into new ones.

"All right, who has done this before?" asks Ms Valerie Wong, the workshop's refashioner-cum-instructor.
