Japan’s popular Super Sentai television franchise, which inspired the hit American 1990s show Power Rangers, will end its broadcast in 2026, after a historic 50-year run.
The current series, No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger (No. 1 Squadron Gozyuger), began airing in February.
Japanese media, citing interviews with sources related to broadcaster TV Asahi, reported on Oct 30 that the series’ cancellation comes as production costs exceed income made from events, merchandise and film releases.
The Super Sentai series is a mainstay of the tokusatsu genre, which refers to live-action films or television series that make heavy use of practical special effects.
It first aired in 1975, with the Himitsu Sentai Gorenger (Secret Squadron Gorenger) series. Including the one now running, the franchise has produced 49 series across half a century.
Alongside the Kamen Rider series – another tokusatsu franchise – Super Sentai is known for being a launching pad for young Japanese actors, including Ryusei Yokohama and Tori Matsuzaka.
Power Rangers, the American adaptation of Super Sentai, has been running since 1993.
