Daredevil: Born Again

Now streaming on Disney+

Netflix’s Daredevil (2015 to 2018) was one of the most acclaimed superhero shows of its era, its first season earning a 99 per cent critics’ rating on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.

So, its abrupt cancellation left many fans hanging, and after sporadic appearances in a few other Marvel titles, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) finally gets his own series once more with Daredevil: Born Again, this time on Disney+.

Blinded as a child and with heightened senses and reflexes as a result, Matt is a lawyer by day and a New York vigilante by night.

And the new show, which sees him face off once again with the crime boss Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), occasionally doubles as a courtroom drama.

Why watch it: If you are weary of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s implausible heroes and multiverse sprawl, Daredevil: Born Again is one of the more grounded, realistic superhero tales.

The Studio

Premieres on Apple TV+ on March 26

Canadian funnyman Seth Rogen plays a conflicted movie studio executive in this comedy series about the eternal battle between art and commerce.

The newly appointed head of a struggling studio, Matt (Rogen) finds himself juggling both narcissistic actors and greedy corporate overlords.

And he increasingly realises the reason he got into show business – to make good movies – is often the last thing on anyone’s mind.

Why watch it: The Studio could potentially fill the void left by the comedy-drama Entourage (2004 to 2011), the last series to convincingly satirise Hollywood behind the scenes. And like Entourage, the cast is stacked with famous actors and directors playing themselves, including Martin Scorsese, Zac Efron, Charlize Theron and Olivia Wilde.

With Love, Meghan

Now streaming on Netflix

This reality series is Meghan Markle’s biggest step yet towards becoming a lifestyle influencer.

In a gorgeous house in Montecito – the wealthy California enclave she and husband Prince Harry have called home since stepping back from official royal duties – the Duchess of Sussex shows how she entertains.

The episodes revolve around visits from friends, including American celebrities such as actress Mindy Kaling and chef Roy Choi, as well as Markle’s former make-up artist Daniel Martin.

She shares cooking, decorating and gardening tips as she shows how she prepares for each visit, her philosophy being the pursuit of joy rather than perfection.

Why watch it: This is not the couple’s actual home, but With Love, Meghan is a glimpse into the life of the Sussexes since their very public fallout with the royal family, although Prince Harry makes only one appearance.

For Markle’s many detractors, this is appointment hate-watching. For more neutral observers, it provides context for the torrent of negative comments and reviews – which, for all the snark about the couple’s growing irrelevance, proves the continuing interest in them.

When Life Gives You Tangerines

Premieres on Netflix on March 7

An epic story that begins in Jeju province in the 1950s, the South Korean romance follows a free-spirited girl, Ae-sun (IU) and Gwan-sik (Park Bo-gum), a young man whose love for her is unrequited. But he hangs in there and their relationship – which is tracked all the way up to present-day Seoul – sees a lifetime of setbacks and triumphs.

The show also explores the seasons of their lives, with actors Moon So-ri and Park Hae-joon playing the older Ae-sun and Gwan-sik respectively.

Why watch it: In a nice change from the urban setting of most K-dramas, When Life Gives You Tangerines celebrates rural South Korea and the Jeju dialect. This is also the first major K-drama for K-pop idol IU since her lead role in the hit fantasy drama Hotel Del Luna (2019).
