SINGAPORE – It has been a decade since home-grown Mandopop star Stefanie Sun last headlined her own tour, so when her upcoming world tour Aut Nihilo Sun Yanzi In Concert was announced recently, fans went into a frenzy.
Tickets to her two shows at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on April 5 and 6,
Sun, known for beloved numbers like Cloudy Day (2000) and What I Miss (2007), promised overseas fans that the tour will also travel to places like Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong and, of course, Taiwan – where she made her debut.
Sun launched her singing career in 2000 under Warner Music Taiwan and shot to fame with her self-titled debut album, Yan Zi, which earned her Taiwan’s Golden Melody Award for Best New Artiste.
But fans in Taipei may not be able to see Sun in 2025. According to a report by Taiwanese news outlet Mirror Media, the singer, who is the founder of her own management agency Make Music, had tried to book a slot for her world tour at Taipei Arena – which can accommodate up to 15,000 people – in the second half of 2025.
But the arena – the go-to destination for most major acts stopping in Taipei – is in such high demand that Sun’s team was unable to book it.
Her team told Mirror Media that its bid for the Taipei Arena was unsuccessful, which has been disappointing for Sun.
When asked if she might consider booking the newly constructed Taipei Dome, which opened in 2023 and has a much bigger capacity of 40,000 seats, Sun’s team said: “We have to discuss that with the artiste, but it’s not something being considered at the moment.”
It is not known whether Sun will seek other venues in Taipei or elsewhere in Taiwan, or hold her concert in 2026 instead.
According to Mirror Media, applications to book the Taipei Arena have to be made a year in advance. But following the Covid-19 pandemic, many acts have been flooding the concert calendar and demand for the venue is high.
Moreover, the review committee which oversees the applications changed in 2024 and may have different considerations.
Sun had previously planned to go on a world tour in 2020 to mark her two decades in entertainment, but the pandemic halted those plans. Instead, she held a surprise online concert on YouTube in June 2020. Her upcoming concert will mark the 25th anniversary of her debut.
The singer-songwriter, who was crowned Best Mandarin Female Singer at the Golden Melody Awards in 2005, is widely regarded as one of the most popular Mandopop singers of her generation. She is married to Mr Nadim van der Ros, founder of a consulting firm, and they have a 12-year-old son and a six-year-old daughter.
