SEOUL – The second season of Squid Game, the South Korean Netflix original series that captivated the world upon its release in 2021, will return on Dec 26, with its third and final season set for 2025, the streaming platform announced on Aug 1.
“It’s been almost three years since Season 1 was met with incredible response around the world and many unimaginable events took place,” said Hwang Dong-hyuk, the director of Squid Game, who also helms the remaining two seasons, in a press statement.
“I am thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story.”
The second season will track Seong Gi-hun (also known as Player 456), who remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport. But taking down the organisation proves to be deadlier than he imagined: To end the game, he needs to re-enter it.
South Korean actor Lee Jung-jae will reprise his role as Gi-hun, with co-stars Lee Byung-hun, Gong Yoo and Wi Ha-jun also returning from Season 1.
New cast members include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk and Park Sung-hoon.
Lee Jung-jae, 51, won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series at the 2022 Emmy Awards for his role in Squid Game, becoming the first Asian to win in the category. Hwang, 53, received the Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for the show. THE KOREA HERALD/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
