Singer-songwriter Whylucas, the only Singaporean contestant on the second season of idol production competition reality show Chuang Asia, has made it to the finals.

The 22-year-old NUS Business School undergraduate is one of 21 trainees who have advanced to the finals out of an original pool of 60 contestants.

The remaining participants will compete for a chance to debut as part of an international boy band made up of the top seven finalists.

The line-up of the boy band is determined by a series of challenges and public voting. The finals will air on WeTV on April 6.

While Whylucas did not snag a spot in the top seven after the final 21 were announced in an episode that aired on WeTV on March 30 – he is currently ranked 17th in the final line-up – he was thrilled just to make it to the last round.

In an Instagram post on March 31, the former busker – whose stage name includes his English name Lucas and the initials of his Chinese name Wang Hong Yi – said he was worried that he would be eliminated. But his supporters’ votes helped him to pull through.

He wrote in the post’s caption: “To everyone who has supported me – you have no idea how much your love and encouragement mean to me. I’ve read all your comments and messages, and I’m honestly still in disbelief at the overwhelming support. Every vote, every cheer, every word of encouragement has kept me going.

“I will do my best for you and also I hope (I’ve made) everyone back home in Singapore proud.”

Whylucas has been filming the Chinese-Thai programme in Bangkok for months, taking a gap semester from NUS to pursue his idol dreams. In an interview with The Straits Times in March, he said he has not returned home from Thailand since November 2024.

He called it a privilege to take part in Chuang Asia 2, which featured established pop stars like K-pop girl group Blackpink’s Lisa, Thai singer-actor Jeff Satur, BamBam from K-pop boy band Got7, and Chinese idol The8 from K-pop boy band Seventeen as regular and guest mentors. BamBam and The8 also double as the show’s producers.
