SINGAPORE – While K-pop boy band Seventeen’s sold-out two-night

gig at the National Stadium in Singapore

on Jan 25 and 26 was a high-energy event with powerful dance moves and crowds of screaming fans, there was a more sombre moment during the show on Jan 26.

Member Seungkwan, 27, took a moment to remember his late friend, K-pop boy band Astro’s Moonbin, on what would have been his 27th birthday. Moonbin

died in April 2023.

During his closing remarks, Seungkwan, who did not name Moonbin, said it was his friend’s birthday and dedicated a song to him.

He then delivered an a cappella rendition of his 2024 solo number Dandelion, which has lyrics about the warmth and love someone gave him.

Seungkwan and Moonbin, both born in 1998, were known to be friends.

Shortly after Moonbin’s death, Seungkwan posted a long note on Instagram with multiple pictures of their various outings and said: “For the sake of everyone who loved you, I’ll spread the memories I have of you.

“Watch over me with that fond smile of yours when I do, come visit me in my dreams if you have any requests. You’re definitely my friend in our next life too.”

Aside from Seungkwan, Astro’s Cha Eun-woo, 27, also celebrated his late bandmate’s birthday.

The Island (2022 to 2023) idol-actor posted a photo of a stacked “birthday cake” made of choco pies – a popular South Korean snack – with a pack of chocolate milk on top. The photo looked to have been taken at a grave site.

The post was accompanied by photos of Moonbin, the caption, “Happy birthday, I miss you”, and a clip of Cha saying happy birthday to the camera.

That day, Cha also uploaded on YouTube a video of himself covering the song After A Long Time (1994) by South Korean balladeer Shin Seung-hun.

He wrote in the text description accompanying the video: “Happy birthday Bin, how are you doing? I miss you even more these days. I have so many things I want to talk to you about over drinks, but you’re not here for me to lean on.

“I’m sorry I haven’t been able to visit you as often as l used to. The more I think of you, the harder I work and hold it in – that’s what you wanted, right? But now, it’s starting to feel a bit overwhelming... I don’t know, am I doing well? Your absence feels particularly strong.”
